Food An Important Facet of Survival

Food: An Important Facet of Survival

For some individuals, the idea of having a survival food storage on hand might seem a bit pointless. The concept of direct access to items like food at our beck and call appears as the norm since it has been that way for a majority of our existence. However, there are events in which having a supply of survival food around is a sound option.

There are several situations in which access to food and other important items, or the capability to purchase items could be limited. Hence, having a month or at least 2 months’ worth of food on hand will be a relief.

Natural disasters cannot be avoided especially if you live in locations that are frequently struck by storms, tropical cyclones, or snowstorms, or reside near an active volcano. A number of natural disasters will entail evacuating and leaving your location, like an intense storm.

However, for some people who are going to be stuck in their location, having the best survival food on hand will make things easier.

Pandemics can occur and thankfully we now live in a time where we have the technology to curb them. However, viruses can run rampant. The best approach in this case, whenever a location is stricken by a pandemic, is to isolate all individuals. When you are isolated or quarantined, having an emergency food supply will help you get through the duration.

People lose their jobs all the time, and while this is not actually deemed as a survival situation, in these modern times it is believed to be a scenario which requires emergency preparations, like proper savings, to tide you over, and of course, a supply of food and important items.

Here are 5 examples of food groups that you can depend on during these events.

Meat/some kind of protein

Make sure that you have some kind of protein in your diet; this should always be included in a survival package. You will not face any problems about spoilage on this one since there are available canned meats from sausages, chicken and tuna fish. For vegetarian/vegan options, there are canned beans and their like available too.

Be certain to inspect the expiration dates on these items. Items with long expiration dates are ideal. Mixed nuts and all food items made with them, from peanut butter down to energy bars, are also primary sources of protein. This should always be included in the package.

For vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates

Vegetables and fruits are great sources of vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates. There are canned fruits available that you can include in the bundle like canned pineapples, peaches, oranges, and fruit cocktail. You can also opt for canned vegetables.

Canned fruit and vegetable products typically have a longer shelf life. You can also stock up on dried fruit. They can be consumed as is, and are known to contain a high amount of carbs.

Whole grains

Cereals, crackers, biscuits, bread sticks, and rice are examples of good survival food items. Another healthier alternative is brown rice since it has B-vitamins that benefit the body. However, brown rice does not last as long as the common white rice, thus, if you want whole grains with a wider range of flavors, you can opt for granola bars.

Water

Water is something that you should not forget. Guarantee that you have a sufficient supply of bottled water on hand that you can take in. Every individual at home or in your group must have a gallon’s worth of water each day to prevent a shortage of the stuff. Apart from water, tea, powdered milk, and fruit juices are also good choices.

Condiments

Condiments are portable and they will add flavor to food. Salt is beneficial since it can help preserve food as well.

Last, but not least

In case you have pets, you have to include their needs in the package too. Guarantee that they have a sufficient share of their own food and water. If you have a baby with you, have a good supply of water for the baby’s infant formula. It is crucial that your family and pets’ health will be secured in times of emergencies.
